THE BEST
DIY Home Renovation Projects for the Winter

Home improvement projects aren't just good investments; they can also make your home more convenient and a stylish place to live in.  Here are a few tasks you can take on yourself.  Remember to always call a professional if you are ever in doubt.  Don't run to the store right away or watch complicated videos for your DIY project.  Read about projects you can comfortably do on your own and as well as project experts warn you away from without professional experience or knowledge.

  • Paint:  Painting is one of the easiest and fastest, and most affordable ways to improve your home.  Paint over outdated wall colors, repaint scuffed walls, or paint a concrete patio for a touch of color.  Try a pop of bold colors on a few of your walls as accent walls.  Making sure that you always dust and clean the surfaces before painting.  Call an expert painter if you encounter in moldy or damaged walls to repair before painting on your own.

  • Fix:  Repair and clean simple items; such as wobbly ceiling fans, light bulb replacement or décor, tucking in lifted carpet corners, cleaning baseboard and wainscots.  Call an expert if your project needs real electrical, plumbing, or water damage repair.  Do not attempt these jobs on your own.

  • Restore:  Many types of surfaces can be restored on your own.  Cleaning metal fixtures, cleaning tile grout, and even removing stains from bathroom appliances are just a few examples.  Call a professional if you don't feel  comfortable with restoring expensive surfaces such as countertops, stone, or even hardwood floors.

  • Upgrade:  Upgrade door handles on kitchen and bathroom cabinets.  There are a number of stylish handles you can use to make those areas pop.  A lot of times measurement is not required.  Take the old handles with you to your favorite hardware store and pair up the sizes.  Upgrade your light fixtures.  There are a lot of stylish eco friendly and smart light fixtures and bulbs on the market these days for a great cost.  Upgrade your doorknobs throughout the house.  Try upgrading your entry doors with smart doorknobs which are more durable with added security features.

Tips On How to Enhance Your Home's Curb Appeal

One of the best ways to add value to your home is to upgrade the outside of your home which is call "curb appeal."  A few of the best tips to improve that appeal are siding and shutters.

  • Inspect:  Check your siding and look for any sagging, warping, gapping, or any of them being loose.  You may get a professional to come out and inspect and provide an estimate.  Estimates can be free just to look and provide advice and the best course of action.

  • Cleaning:  Consider power washing your vinyl siding and shutters.  Often just simply cleaning your siding to rid it of stains, mildew, and dirt can change the entire look of the outside of your home.  The same is true for the shutters.  However, if you see a lot of fading and cracking, you may want to get a professional estimate on repairs or replacement.

  • Paint:  Bring bold colors to your shutters by repainting them.  Try dark bold colors on them and try to stay away from those bright colors or go with a neutral color like white or grey.  Always remember to clean, prep, and prime your shutters before you paint them.  Paint all your outside door frames to match.  Contact a professional if you feel uncomfortable with doing this on your own.  Often a professional can provide you with a free estimate and reasonable cost to do the job.
